Whenever I used to indulge in any discussion of kosha mangsho, the first thought that used to come up was the famed “Golbarir Kosha mangsho” with parantha. The rich oil flavoured garam masala mixed mutton pieces were the topic of discussion for a long time – well until, I was able to savour it this weekend.
I travelled all the way from Lake Gardens to Shyambazar in the afternoon to taste the authentic one (I heard a new eatery has come up on Ripon st.). The eatery is placed right on a corner of the Shyambazar crossing. It is small and dark and I took my seat. The menu was list is rather short and is hung from the wall. However, without my ado, I ordered a couple of paranthas and “motton” kosha. The food came onto the table in almost no time. The mutton looked dark with oodles of oil rich, thick gravy.
I tore off a piece of the ghee smeared soft parantha and dipped it into the mutton curry, and the first thing that I felt on tasting the curry was – it contained burnt and bitter darchini. When I tried on the mutton I found them to be somewhat uncooked. The mutton pieces were hard and needed sufficient force to be torn up.I had the lunch over in sometime, paid the bill and left off, with distaste.
Needless to say, I was disappointed with my first rendezvous.I will try and taste it sometime later and let you know whether my first experience was an aberration!
