When my aunty and uncle came to our place this June, and when the rainy June seemed to be unspottable, we had a few Rui pieces which were lying in the refrigerator for 3-4 days. And since I am a maniac when it comes to eating freshly made fish curries, my aunty decided to turn the tables around me with this recipe.She cooked those fishes with such a twist that I had mopped up my plate with them.
Yesterday (Saturday) I decided to cook the same for my wife and she loved it so much, that she repeated my act.

Preparation Time:10 mins
Cooking Time:30 mins

Serves:3

Ingredients:

  • Rui: 250 gms. Cut into around 25 pieces.
  • Onion: 50 gms.Sliced longitudinally.
  • Ginger:1/4th of an inch.Crushed.
  • Garlic:3-4 cloves.Crushed
  • Tomato: 25 gms. Cut into fine pieces
  • Green Chili: 3-4.Cut into small pieces.
  • Powdered Spices
    • Cumin Powder:1 tsp
    • Turmeric Powder: 1.5 tsp for coating the fish pieces, 1 tsp for the fry
    • Dry Red Chili Powder:1 tsp
  • Whole Spices:
    • Dry Red Chili:2
    • Cumin Seeds: 1/2 tsp
  • Salt: To taste
  • Sugar: 1 tsp
  • Mustard Oil: 3 tbsp for frying the fishes, 2 tbsp for the curry

Procedure:

  • Coat the fish pieces with turmeric powder and salt to taste and leave aside for 10 mins.
  • Fry the fish pieces in 3tbsp mustard oil, 5-6 pieces at a time until the pieces turn reddish brown.
  • Rest the fried fishes on a piece of tissue to soak in the excess oil.
  • Heat 2 tbsp of mustard oil in the same kadai.
  • When the oil gets hot, add the whole spices first.
  • Let the spices start to crackle, then add the powdered spices.
  • After 1 min, add the ginger and garlic pastes.
  • Stir for another minute and then add the onion slices.
  • Sprinkle the sugar onto the onion and cook until the onion slices turn reddish brown.
  • Then add the tomato pieces.
  • Cook until all the juices from the tomato disappears.
  • Then add the green chilies.Adjust the amount of salt required.
  • Fry for 2 more minutes.
  • Then add the fried fish pieces.
  • Stir fry for 6-8 mins further.

Then serve with rice.
